Does Someone Need Your Smile Today?
It was a Tuesday afternoon, and I had pushed the elevator button to go down to the lobby area following a sales call. The elevator door opened and I quickly entered and found myself riding the elevator down with another woman. I greeted her with a smile and asked her how she was doing. She
smiled back and told me that she was doing so much better now that she saw my smile. In fact, she emphatically stated, my smile had made her day. I was moved and stunned at her obvious joy all because I smiled. Once the elevator stopped at the lobby floor, we both stepped out each walking in different directions. And then, she quickly turned and raised her voice and said, “ yes, I needed that smile, and if you keeping smiling like that, a bunch more people will be feeling much better, too.” We said our goodbyes, and I was so humbled. At that moment I thanked God for the gift of meeting that woman. However, I couldn’t get the teachable moment out of my head.
We don’t know what any one person is dealing with in their personal lives. So many people are encumbered by the numerous challenges that come with living in this world. And a smile, which may seem insignificant, can touch a life in such a powerful way. A smile…it costs nothing but yet it possesses the power to positively impact the people in the world around us.
Matthew 5:14 says:
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”
And, Matthew 5:16 reads:
“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Light is radiant, bright, and it glows. God is light and if our souls are the temple of the Living God, then His light is in us. In essence, we are the reflectors of the light of God to a world that is challenged by the many facets of its darkness. When we smile, the radiance of His light shines through the windows of our eyes. That light of God has the power to touch people in such a therapeutic way. Wow!
It reminded me of a something my pastor said: “not everyone is born to preach, yet everyone has a gift they can use to impact the world for God.” At that moment, my gift was a smile full of the light of God. I left that building feeling like I could change the world, one smile at a time. So the next time you find yourself among strangers, use those 16 muscles and give them the gift of a radiant, warm, and loving smile. You might be surprised at the effect your free gift will have on them and it will boomerang back to you.
